TAKE THE STAIRS

Take the Stairs was a group project I was part of. We were asked to develop an interactive solution so that students and faculties at The Hague University of Applied Sciences would take the stairs instead of the elevator. The stairwells in the school are cold and made of concrete. The overall feeling of the stairwells is a bit chilly.

There were plenty of studies about factors that increase or decrease stairwell usage. Also, the target group needed a nudge to take the stairs. After all the research we did, we came up with the idea to make the stairwells an interactive experience in which your environment will react on your movements. It would make it fun to take the stairs. The surroundings should change every few weeks, so that the target group wouldn't get bored or get used to the interaction.

We found an example of an interactive wall in art'otel Amsterdam.

The idea was that every stairwell in the school would have a different theme. For example: Space or Ocean. This would make the target group feel like they are part of their surroundings in the stairwell.

Unfortunately, we didn't have the access to the right instruments to build a prototype.

Special thanks to art'otel Amsterdam for letting us film the interactive wall.
